As
the days grow shorter and cooler, your landscape is
adjusting to these seasonal changes. This is a good
time to think about checking up on your irrigation
system to save money and be nice to your plants. In
fact, LVMWD recommends that you or your landscaper
check your system at least four times a year, when
the seasons change. For the cooler moist winter months
you should be able to reduce the number of days per
week the irrigation system will operate. Gradual adjustments
are better for your landscape than a large reduction
in watering all at once. Many individual variables
should be considered, such as the type of sprinkler
head, number of stations, types of plants, and soil
types. Some plantings, such as flowers, may need more
frequent watering, while trees benefit from deep soakings
that reach the roots.
Since nearly 70% of the
water consumed in our area is used outdoors, being
familiar with your irrigation system makes sense.
If you can’t remember how to operate the system,
or can’t locate the manual, call the manufacturer
or ask your local hardware store for assistance.
