Remember the phrase "a picture is worth a thousand words"? Just look at this pie chart showing typical water use by homeowners in LVMWD’s service area.

  • Irrigation is the water hog at 69%. Of all drinking water delivered to LVMWD customers, over 70% is used outside, when you include water for pools and hot tubs.

  • Clothes washers use 6.9%. (A good reason to consider water efficient models.)

  • Toilets are 6.1% of typical home use. (Lower than most areas, in part because of LVMWD’s long-standing rebate program for changing out water guzzling models.)

  • Showers consume 4.7%.

  • Faucets follow close behind showers at 4.3%. Leaks are almost as much as faucets at 4.0%. Conserving water indoors is a good idea. Conserving water used outdoors is a great idea. Less water used outdoors, particularly during the winter months, means less water needs to be imported, and that’s good news for you and the environment.
