Western Spice Bush1 Calycanthus occidentalis

Calycanthus occidentalis


This deciduous shrub produces red/brown blossoms in the spring. Prefers sun to partial shade and moderate water. Can be trained into multi-stemmed tree but best used as a background shrub or screen. Blossoms and bruised leaves have an "old wine barrel" fragrance.

Plant size: 6-12' high x 8-12' wide

This native evergreen shrub does best with regular watering but can tolerant less. Grows in either sun or shade with creeping rhizomes. Buttercup yellow spring blossoms develop into blue berries that attract birds. A popular landscaping species due to easy maintenance.

This perennial has beautiful orange-red flowers that attract hummingbirds. A popular choice for local gardens. Likes shade and is moderately drought tolerant. Benefits from annual pruning of spent flower stalks.

Plant size: 2-3' high x 2' wide.
