(CALABASAS CA, May 24 2005) The Board of Directors of Las Virgenes Municipal Water District (LVMWD) today recognized 12 water conservation posters created by local students, from over 2600 entries ~ double the number of entries from 2004. This year, students created original artwork expressing the theme "Water Conservation at Home."

In recognition of their excellence, the artwork will be displayed at LVMWD Headquarters on Las Virgenes Road through the coming year and will be featured on 2006 calendars produced and distributed in December. The top ten posters will go on to compete for additional honors by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, which judges posters entered from communities across Southern California.

A beautiful Waterford Crystal perpetual trophy was presented to Principal Brent Noyes of Yerba Buena Elementary School, in recognition of the exceptional work of top finalist Inez Lam, a 5th grade student in Mrs. Fleishman's class. Inez's colorful poster, showing water drops and a wishing well, states, "Water holds the world up. Don't let it go to waste." Inez has been a finalist for three years in a row!

All students honored were awarded certificates of merit and a t-shirt imprinted with their own poster, as well as poster-printed t-shirt and mouse pad for their family. Other students receiving recognition were:

  • Kevin Adams, a 3rd grader from Sumac Elementary in Mr. Tally's class. With realistic representation, Kevin shows a wooden bucket overflowing with water and states, "Don't Overflow It. . . Or you'll Blow It!"

  • Karen Alvarez, a 4th grader also from Sumac Elementary in Ms. Ray's class. Karen artistically shows a faucet with a water drop and how to use the drop, declaring, "Conserve It Until the Last Drop."

  • Isabel Barry & Makenzie Taguchi, 5th graders from Bay Laurel Elementary in Miss Davis's class worked together to create their poster. Using bold colors and design, the poster shows a clipboard listing ways to conserve water and states, "Water - If you conserve it, more goes to those who deserve it."

  • Sandy Choi, a 5th grader from Willow Elementary in Mrs. Shannon and Mrs. Fogelson's class. This poster depicts a peaceful pastoral scene with flowers, grass, a sunset and ways to use water, with the statement, "Water is Life - Go and show the power of H2O."

  • Liz Itkin, a 5th grader from Chaparral Elementary in Mrs. Brinkman's class, used pastels to create her dramatic poster showing a floral arrangement in a glass bowl. Her poster reminds us "Water, plants need it too!"

  • Lexie Katzman a 5th grader from Yerba Buena Elementary in Mrs. Champion's class. This bright, eye-catching poster proclaims "Save Water All Year Long!" and shows seasonal ways to save water.

  • Chase Lancaster, a 4th grader from Bay Laurel Elementary in Mrs. Ratajczak's class. Chase's poster states "Turn it Down, Turn it Off. Water Conservation Begins at Home" and shows a cut-away home with all the rooms and yard areas that use water.

  • Greg Luxenberg, a 5th grader from Yerba Buena Elementary also in Mrs. Champion's class. Greg's poster shows a desert scene with an elderly gentleman reminiscing about past water waste and states, "Don't waste water!"

  • Nicholas Mason, a 1st grader from Lupin Hill Elementary in Mrs. Champlin's class. Nicholas's bold and direct poster states, "Water should go in a cup NOT down the drain", and depicts a young boy brushing his teeth.

  • Taylor Paolina, a 4th grader from Lupin Hill Elementary in Mrs. Hunt's class. Taylor's poster clearly presents a water-wise reminder, "Don't use the sprinklers while it is raining."

  • Kacie Tomita, a 5th grader from Yerba Buena Elementary in Mrs. Champion's class. "Save Water!" states Kacie's poster, with a variety of colorful scenes showing examples of how to conserve water.

"We are thrilled at the quality of this year's artwork and extremely happy with the record number of children who participated. We thank Las Virgenes Unified School District for its support as well as the parents of the students," said LVMWD board president Charlie Caspary. "When children learn about water conservation, we all win!"
