Your water must travel hundreds of miles south to reach the LVMWD service area. Flowing down the Sacramento River, the most critical link in this 400+ mile supply chain is the Sacramento/San Joaquin Bay Delta, a complex network of islands, sloughs, levees and channels. At the south end of the delta are the pumps that lift water into the California Aqueduct that conveys water to treatment and distribution facilities operated by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.

The challenges to the Delta are many, including floods, earthquakes, levee failure and environmental concerns that include sustaining threatened species. A levee failure could cause an inrush of salt water from San Francisco Bay, making it necessary to shut down pumping operations for months on end. The pumps could also be stopped for environmental reasons.

Last November, voters approved bond measures intended to address some of the concerns in the Bay Delta but it will take time to build the needed improvements. We urge you to stay informed on this important issue. Although it is hundreds of miles to our north, what happens in the Delta is critical to your water supply.
