(February 25, 2003 Calabasas, CA. . .) Water served by Las Virgenes Municipal Water District (LVMWD) to residents of Agoura Hills, Calabasas, Westlake Village, Hidden Hills and unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County recently won a Silver Medal in an international water taste competition.

The contest entry was submitted by Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD), the wholesale agency that is the source for all water served by LVMWD to its customers. The samples were taken from MWD's Jensen Filtration Plant in Granada Hills. This water originates in the high Sierras, and then travels south more than 400 miles through the immense aqueduct system of California's State Water Project.

"We're pleased to have this independent confirmation of the high quality water supplied to our customers", commented Jim Colbaugh, LVMWD's General Manager. "Our area has no local water supply, so we are unique among MWD member agencies in taking 100% of the drinking water we serve from the Jensen Filtration Plant."

Water quality is a top priority for both water agencies. MWD conducts more than 300,000 tests annually to ensure water quality meets both State and Federal drinking water standards, with thousands of additional tests conducted once the water enters the LVMWD service area.

"Las Virgenes is fortunate to have a water source of such high quality, free from contaminants like perchlorate and MTBE, which have made recent headlines in other parts of California," Colbaugh commented. Each year, Las Virgenes Municipal Water District publishes a comprehensive summary of testing throughout the prior year, mailed to all customers. Copies of the Water Quality Report are available online at www.LVMWD.com under Your Water.

The International Water Tasting and Competition includes categories for municipal, bottled, purified and sparkling waters. The water from Jensen took second place, ahead of 44 other entries from the United States and Canada. Contest judges considered appearance, aroma, flavor, "mouth-feel", and aftertaste. First place winner, Montpelier Ohio, received 464 points, the water from Jensen received 451 points, and Desert Hot Springs, California, ranked third with 435 points.
